What is the important?

During a time of crisis, we tend to reflect on what is essential.

The concept of essential is a belief that things have a set of characteristics which make them what they are. This is referred to as essence. The essence gives purpose which refers to essentialism.

When we strip down the necessities of everyday, the excessive nonessential things become disregarded and less important.

Currently

As of now, the current events of our world dealing with a situation of a highly infectious virus spreading rapidly. During this time, there are some who are going into panic mode and hoarding essentials to human beings. There are some who are already prepared, and in less of a panic.

One of the reasons some are not panicking is understanding a simple rule, knowing what is essential. From the beginning, before a pandemic, or end of world situation, if you already know what is important, then you are already prepared for the unknown. A great example is how people handle their finance.

Unfortunately, there is still a high percentage of people who do not have an emergency fund or enough savings in case of a rainy day. Because of this situation, many individuals and families ride along a paycheck to paycheck lifestyle. Placing that into relation when we are in a crisis; if something were to happen where society has to go into a lockdown and access to work is limited or worse you are laid off, panic mode is initiated. All of a sudden there is a mental inventory of where all the money has been going, what has been important and what has been nonessential. If we exercise a review of what is important, and prepare, then panic would not ensue.

Panic

Acting on emotion can blind logic. Being calm when making choices and not falling into emotions or panic will give clarity to the situation at hand,. So when you find people hoarding toilet paper and all the sanitizer, they are panicking. They are worried about be bunked up with no access to what is considered important. Also there are some who poach opportunities and try to capitalize on reselling these items while the world suffers. Those people, in my opinion, lack the empathy and common sense to act human. I always think of the rule 2 is 1, and 1 is none.

The rule is an idea of always having a backup plan or a plan b. If I have 1 essential item left, that is as if I have none and I need to restock supplies. When I follow this rule, there is always one left for emergencies. List our what things you cannot live without. Be honest, and frivolous when making this list. You can live without an extra chair, but maybe cannot live without a can of beans for emergencies. Once you have this list, check your stock. If you only have one, then you need to probably restock that item. When you go out and restock, do not try and buy 20 cans of beans, be conscious of what amount is appropriate and purchase accordingly.

Let’s be honest also, you do not need to hoard toilet paper, no one poops that much. There are other alternatives as well, such as a bidet, or even shower. So stop being shitty, wash your hands and start being a person with compassion.
