Intangibles
“The older I get, the more I reflect on being a kid.”
A child has honest eyes viewing the world. No restrictions and open imagination move the world to newer outlooks. During our innocent times as a child, we develop subtle personal intangibles. Building feelings with our experiences influence our character and form the framework of who we are and who we become.
Growing up with my mom pushing me into music opened me to the recognition and love of the sounds encompassing our everyday lives. Music expressing and empowering people to fall into deep thought and entrancing our bodies to move and dance was the springboard to lead me to dance. These attributes are good, but an intangible quality I picked up was the rebellion of being told what to do. The introduction of music will always be a blessing, but being forced to do it as a child began building a resentment to control. Independence to be curious left me. The world’s restrictions were taking away my childhood. I would rebel against the rules or just quit.
“I want my heartbeat of the music and my dance to sync with you who watches.”
Ironically, now as I am older, the desire to try and control everything is something I struggle with. Anxiously trying to keep order in my life, I would avoid changes. That notion of control would create my expression in my dance. Learning to let go and not be confined to requirements directed by others. Instead, I would try to control the chaos within myself. Letting go of the things you cannot control and being content.
“You cannot always control what goes on outside. But you can always control what goes on inside.” -Wayne Dyer.
The origin story of Hip Hop and Breaking spoke with how I was feeling and mainly the reason I still am a practitioner today. Life experiences are like badges we earn as we progress in life.
Those experiences shape our lens and perception. As simple as we all are as kids, I lived life with extremes. Great moments were exciting, and bad times were discouraging. Taking these extreme ends and forming them became expressions of my style of dance. Simple transitions in steps could set up dynamic moves. The patterns and rhythm would set the pace of the dance.
There are the intangibles. Reach someone’s passion so they can connect with you. In return, you feel the energy of others to voice their feelings at that moment.
